The Competition

We're counting votes! We'll announce the winners of the 2012 Learning Competition on May 24, 2012.

Plasma Protein reference poster

Project Plan
Our project plan is to develop a Plasma Protein reference poster to provide a quick reference and inform technologists about the plasma protein products currently available in Canada. The poster would include the product name, manufacturer, indications for use, and storage temperature. The poster would be available on-line to view or print. Bloodtech.ca has offered to host the poster and we would explore links to other Transfusion Medicine web sites. The poster would include hyperlinks to the manufacturer's websites for more information and package inserts. The development of this poster would include both English and French versions. As more plasma protein products and manufacturers become available confusion can arise.

To provide information to MLT's working in Transfusion Services
To provide fast access to manufacturer's package inserts

Annual poster review for 3 years
What challenges could possibly hinder your project's success?
challenges:
Making contacts with the manufacturers may take time to develop which could delay the completion of the project. Department staffing numbers would also hinder the forward motion of the project. The annual review to ensure that current information is accessed could be considered a challenge for this project.

Potential pitfalls

My first thought is that this worthwhile project is something CBS should be doing for its customers. When I investigated something similar in 2004 for the TraQ program of the BC PBCO and contacted CBS, several issues were identified (see below). I think CBS was planning to do something itself but the logistics were too onerous. 1. Manufacturers websites may be USA and insert information is "country-specific" 2. To avoid bias (real or imagined): - list products alphabetically - list product even if no insert is available - limit to products licensed in Canada (or available via the Special Access Programme) - limit to products stocked by CBS and H-Q 3. To ensure inserts are current: - link to inserts on Canadian manufacturer's websites 4. Terms of use and disclaimer need to be prominent due to legal liability Good luck. Cheers, Pat

Great ideas

We have spoken to Josephine Cymbulski, a Plasma Protein Specialist with CBS, and it doesn't appear that this is on the to-do list for CBS. When we checked the manufacture's web sites, there is information for Canadian customers available. All of the suggestions in point number 2 have been included in our work plan. In regards to point number 4, we have already decided to put a disclaimer on the poster. Thanks for all of your comments. They are all great ideas. Robyn

please clarify budget details

Hi Robyn & collaborators, I have certainly received feedback that this is a welcome resource, despite the onerous task of keeping it up to date. In your budget details, you mention an annual poster review for 3 years; unfortunately, the Learning Competition can only provide funding for one year. Will you try to keep this poster up to date after 2012?

Response

Hi Shanta, We have discussed this in our department and the thoughts are that we would try to keep the poster up to date. Robyn
